Blueberry Pie - minus elderberries

                                                       Grab a fork ---  It's sooooooo yummy!!
                                                ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Believe me, I had intended to make The ElderBlueberry Pie. I even found and ordered freeze-dried elderberries because no fresh ones seemed to be found here in Texas, at least not at present. I had read that red elderberries are not edible and, when picking, one must choose dark berries not red.  So, I opened one of my bags of berries to make the pie:
........and instantly decided the pie would be Blueberry sans Elderberry. I have five bags unopened.
Instead,  I thought I would use the exercise to practice baking a berry pie since I never have -
And, I had splurged on Rose's new baking ensemble -  Mmmm
Only King Arthur's Pastry Flour Would do ---
And so the crust began -
Will I ever learn if Rose's small peas are the size of Le Sueur's?
I loooove this stretchy implement!
And the pretty white Rose's plate - [need a lot more practice with that crust! I don't do it often enough so it still scares me].
The blueberries were organic and huge. I added some lemon zest as in Rose's early recipe.
In keeping with the tradition of old weavers of Persian rugs that since only the Almighty makes perfection there would always be a flaw in the weaving - if you look verrrrry closely, you just might see it here - [not the bow]  Lol!
And, a really fun thing happened just now as I am sitting in the kitchen at work at the table typing up this blog at 4 o'clock. Suddenly my phone rang and I saw it was my husband. I answered, and listened as he said he wanted to tell me right away that he had just eaten a slice of the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. The pie, of course, has settled and blended for a day. He waxed enthusiastic that it was now the best pie he had ever eaten, and enhanced by the vanilla ice cream. He said he just had to call and tell me! Wow! Not only a big blue berry, but a big blue ribbon!
  1. Good call! Your blueberry pie is so pretty. I have never had a blueberry pie, guess it's time to remedy that.
  3. Oh I want a "stretchy implement" and Rose's new baking ensemble … but not as much as I want your china collection! Beautiful photos and I guarantee no one would be searching for a flaw in the lattice when faced with such a gorgeous bake. ---Jeniffer
    1. Lol - you are sooo funny! and sweet, and kind - no wonder Stuart wants to steal your magical ganache! I'm glad you like the armorial plates - I love them too - 1800 Moustiers faience. I collect china, or I used to - But I know that is a besetting sin of yours too, he he. And! I haven't seen what splendiferous masterpiece is emerging from your portals yet a la blueberry!
  4. Joan: looks GREAT! About the elderberries: I picked up mine today from a lovely farmer. (Read the tale on my blog, hopefully tomorrow.) I was shocked--little BB's!! I had no idea what to expect!! Yours look more like peppercorns! She told me that they are very healthful and good for keeping the flu and colds at bay, so maybe brew some tea this winter. Evidently our Appalachian elders did that often,, or so my charming new friend told me. Since you have so many, you might need this info!! :-)
  5. Cant wait to see your adventure! I read so much about the magical medicinal attributes of these elderberries that I forgot it all when they didnt work for pie, or anyway I didn't try them. You are absolutely right. I should make some sort of infusion. People swear by the juices for flu etc. Thanks for reminding me.
  7. I like all your 'Rose' baking gear! Your pie looks perfect to me. I'm just curious if your husband was ringing about the pie from the living room? :)
  8. Oh, I was at work in our kitchen there doing the blog and he called me on my cell. My office is in a small house located whereI contract myself out to a referral base for cases from Child Protective Services as a Jungian Psychotherapist.
    Well, over the years I have replaced a lot of old stuff with Rose's. Among other things, I have her caramel pot which I love for a lot of things bec of its little pouring spouts, i.e. heating liquid to put into the Cuisinart feed tube and of course caramel. I adore my double boiler of hers, and the KA beater blade a lot, and pie plate. And of course I really love the new pastry set. I am in terror over crusts and pastries so I just decided to give myself all the help I could get. I think, even if just psychologically, it helped with this pie.
  9. Hi Joan, Pass me a fork please. Your beauty shot is gorgeous. I considered splurging on Rose's kit too, but my kitchen is full to the tits and I have to draw the proverbial line somewhere. Anyway, congratulations on making the best blueberry pie ever.
